Pres.Trump announces 25% tariffs on seven countries including Japan, South Korea starting August 1st

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that at least seven countries are set to face steep tariffs on their imports, to begin on Aug. 1st.

In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump shared screenshots of form letters dictating new tariff rates to the leaders of Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Laos and Myanmar. Goods imported to the U.S. from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Kazakhstan are now set to face 25% tariffs, while South African goods will be subject to a 30% U.S. tariff, and imports from Laos and Myanmar will face a 40% duty.

Trump had imposed a Wednesday deadline for nations to negotiate better trade deals; on April 2, he announced 10% across-the-board baseline tariffs on 90 trading partners and harsher ones for the worst offenders. However just one week later, he pushed the deadline back until July 9 for the reciprocal duties.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested that 14 letters will be sent out Monday, and confirmed that Trump would sign an executive order to delay the Wednesday deadline until Aug. 1.

USA Today reported that in addition to Japan and South Korea, other nations are bracing for higher tariffs, including the 27 countries in the European Union – with as many as 100 letters potentially being sent out to nations.

Death toll rises to over 80 after devastating central Texas flash flooding

A catastrophic flash flood has claimed the lives of over 80 people in central Texas, as heavy rains battered the Hill Country region causing a sudden surge of of 20-26 feet of the Guadalupe River near Kerrville, leading to widespread damage and road washouts – leaving to a wave of emergency rescues.

The death toll rose across six counties as of Sunday evening. In Kerr County, officials reported 68 deaths — those of 40 adults and 28 children. Officials said 10 children are still missing from Camp Mystic.

Governor Greg Abbott noted that some of those rescued had been clinging to tree branches to avoid being swept away. Abbott also revealed that he had signed an amended federal disaster declaration to include additional counties impacted by the severe weather.

Secretary Noem, present at the briefing, said President Trump had expressed his intention to support the updated declaration. Texas Senator Ted Cruz shared on social media: “Please pray right now for everyone in the Hill Country, especially Camp Mystic. Today, I’ve spoken with Gov Abbott, Lt. Gov Patrick, the head of TDEM & President Trump. Multiple helicopters are performing search & rescue. President Trump committed ANYTHING Texas needs. 🙏🙏

Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly also spoke during the briefing, revealing that his own property had been ravaged by the floodwaters and that he narrowly made it home on Friday. Kelly shared that he had visited a local funeral home and witnessed the overwhelming toll firsthand. He later toured the devastation by helicopter alongside Senator John Cornyn and Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick told reporters Friday that the Guadalupe River surged more than 26 feet in less than an hour. He said there had been no rainfall in the area until shortly before the flash flood hit, and emergency alerts were sent out early Friday morning between 4 and 5 a.m.

Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One late Friday night, President Trump described the flooding as a “terrible thing.” On Saturday, he said his administration was actively working alongside Texas state and local officials to provide relief. Trump wrote in a Truth Social post: “The Trump Administration is working with State and Local Officials on the ground in Texas in response to the tragic flooding that took place yesterday. Our Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, will be there shortly. Melania and I are praying for all of the families impacted by this horrible tragedy. Our Brave First Responders are on site doing what they do best. GOD BLESS THE FAMILIES, AND GOD BLESS TEXAS!”

President Donald Trump later announced he had signed a major disaster declaration for Kerr County; which allows first responders to have access to the resources they need as they continue to work on search and recovery efforts. The Department of Homeland Security said Sunday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is on the ground in the region to provide assistance.

2 teens killed, 5 wounded after mass shooting in Indianapolis

Two teens were killed and five others wounded after a mass shooting early Saturday morning in downtown Indianapolis. Police have not determined a motive but detained seven for questioning and recovered several firearms.

The Indianapolis Star reported that two boys, ages 16 and 15, were fatally struck at about 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of South Illinois and West Washington streets in downtown Indianapolis. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other boy died after being taken to a nearby hospital. Five other shooting victims were hospitalized.

Police found the victims while responding to a report of a fight at the same location. Two of the injured are 19-year-olds, the others are ages 16 and 17, while the fifth person injured is 21-years-old.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey said in a statement that the parents who allowed hundreds of teens to go unsupervised while out at night are partly to blame: “This kind of violence … is completely unacceptable and unnecessary We are not your children’s keepers. You are. Parents and guardians have got to step up.”

The mass shooting was among several violent incidents that occurred after the annual 4th of July fireworks, with Police Chief Bailey stating that police made 20 arrests during the night and recovered firearms from two juveniles in the downtown area before the mass shooting took place.

See the trailer for Netflix’s ‘Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Destination Wedding’

Netflix released a trailer for Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Destination Wedding, the 13th installment in the comedic ‘Madea’ franchise.

The film also marks the 20th anniversary of the Madea franchise, which began with Diary of a Mad Black Woman in 2005. Written, directed and produced by Perry, Madea’s Destination Wedding sees Perry’s Madea traveling to the Bahamas with her family to celebrate the surprise wedding of her nephew’s daughter, Tiffany (Diamond White), to a rapper she met on a yacht.

Perry, who plays multiple roles in the film, shared: “It’s been 20 years now since ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman’ came out. To see that this character is still enduring, and people are still watching and enjoying and laughing, it’s really mind-blowing to me. I keep coming back because some of this is just escapism. Just let’s leave the world behind for a moment and come to Madea’s house, and have some good food and laugh, and cry and celebrate and be all of those things.”

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Destination Wedding also stars Cassi Davis Patton, David Mann, Tamela Mann, Taja V. Simpson, Jermaine Harris and Xavier Smalls. The film debuts July 11, and is Perry’s second Madea film to be released in creative partnership with Netflix. See the trailer: HERE.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong to star opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar in ‘Buffy’ reboot series

Hulu’s upcoming revival of the beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise has officially cast Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the next slayer. Armstrong is known for her roles as Alma in American Horror Story: Red Tide and Fern in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew; casting was also confirmed by Deadline.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who famously played Buffy Summers in the original series, shared the news through an Instagram video: “From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room”.

Gellar revealed earlier this year that she had been working for three years on this reboot alongside writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, with the initial concept coming from Chloé Zhao. In the revival, Gellar will reprise her iconic role, with Armstrong playing the new slayer (described in casting materials as an introverted high-school student) in the untitled Buffyverse project, which Gellar will executive produce for Hulu.

No additional information has been provided about the project, which comes from 20th Television and Searchlight TV.

Bail denied for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs until sentencing on 2 lesser counts in sex trafficking trial

U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian denied Sean “Diddy” Combs request for bail as he awaits sentencing in his federal sex trafficking trial. On Wednesday, jurors unanimously convicted Combs on counts 3 and 5 in the case, but found him not guilty on the most serious counts – 1, 2, and 4 – after three days of deliberations.

Judge Subramanian set a sentencing date for Oct. 3; however in response to Combs’ attorneys request for an expedited sentencing, Subramanian agreed to set up a remote conference for July 8 at 2 p.m. to hear arguments about the pre-sentencing process, and to discuss a proposal to move up the sentencing date.

Combs was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges following his high-profile federal trial in New York City, but was convicted on two lesser charges of transportation of former girlfriends for prostitution un the split verdict, and could face up to 20 years in prison if he is sentenced to consecutive maximum prison terms.

Judge Subramanian had stated that he wanted to read letters from both sides before making his decision regarding bail. Combs’ attorney Mark Agnifilo requested that Combs “should be released on appropriate conditions” immediately, while the prosecution countered the request, stating that it posed a “real risk” to let him walk free, and further argued that Combs should be detained as his charges under the Mann Act require detention. They stated that “the only conceivable basis for release here is the existence of ‘exceptional circumstances.’” Prosecutors wrote that “even if detention was not mandatory here, which it is, the defendant cannot meet his burden to show by clear and convincing evidence that he is not likely to flee or pose a danger to any other person or the community.”

Combs’ legal team had proposed a bail package including a $1 million bond; travel restrictions to certain areas of Florida, California and New York or New Jersey; surrendering his passport; and drug testing.  His attorneys argued that prosecutors were overstating his sentencing exposure and noted that he was not convicted of a violent crime, stating that detention is not necessary due to his “exceptional circumstances,” including looking after his children as well as his mother, Janice Combs, who is 85 years old.

Combs’ attorneys argued throughout the trial that the sexual encounters had been consensual and introduced several exhibits, including text messages, into evidence intended to reinforce that argument. Over the course of the trial, prosecutors called 34 witnesses over the course of 29 days of testimony. Among them was Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, Combs’ ex-girlfriend, with whom he was in a relationship for 11 years. Prosecutors sought to prove that she had been coerced into participating in elaborate sex performances with male sex workers, with Ventura giving several days of testimony describing abuse.

After Combs was found not guilty of sex trafficking, Ventura’s attorney Douglas H. Wigdor released a statement: “This entire criminal process started when our client Cassie Ventura had the courage to file her civil complaint in November 2023. Although the jury did not find Combs guilty of sex trafficking Cassie beyond a reasonable doubt, she paved the way for a jury to find him guilty of transportation to engage in prostitution. By coming forward with her experience, Cassie has left an indelible mark on both the entertainment industry and the fight for justice. We must repeat — with no reservation — that we believe and support our client who showed exemplary courage throughout this trial. She displayed unquestionable strength and brought attention to the realities of powerful men in our orbit and the misconduct that has persisted for decades without repercussion … this case proved that change is long overdue, and we will continue to fight on behalf of survivors.”

While Combs was acquitted on the most serious charges, he is still facing several dozen lawsuits accusing him of sexual misconduct and abuse.

Paramount reaches $16 million settlement in Pres. Trump’s ’60 Minutes’ lawsuit

Paramount has reached a settlement with President Donald Trump, after he sued CBS News for $20 billion over the editing of a ’60 Minutes’ interview with his Democratic opponent for the presidency, Kamala Harris. No apology was included as part of the agreement.

Paramount has agreed to pay $16 million to settle the lawsuit – was filed in the Northern District of Texas and sought $20 billion in damages — that had alleged an interview that aired on “60 Minutes” last year with Harris was deceptively edited.  Specifically, the lawsuit focused on an answer Harris gave to a question about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a preview of the interview that ran on Oct. 5, Harris was edited giving one answer; however during the 60 Minutes episode that aired the next night, she was seen giving another answer. A transcript of the entire interview later published by CBS News shows that both responses came from the same, longer answer that Harris gave to the question. Trump and his legal team accused CBS News in the lawsuit of “substantial news distortion calculated to (a) confuse, deceive and mislead the public, and (b) attempt to tip the scales in favor of the Democratic Party.”

Paramount Global (the parent company of CBS) said in a statemen that the settlement, reached through mediation, includes plaintiffs’ fees and costs and directs $16 million toward the creation of Mr. Trump’s future presidential library and the legal expenses of the plaintiffs. Neither Trump nor his co-plaintiff, Texas Representative Ronny Jackson, will personally receive any of the funds. The statement read: “The settlement will include a release of all claims regarding any CBS reporting through the date of the settlement, including the Texas action and the threatened defamation action.”

As part of the deal, Paramount also committed to ensuring future interviews with presidential candidates on “60 Minutes” will have transcripts made available to the public, though redactions may be applied in cases involving legal or national security concerns.

A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team said in a statement: “With this record settlement, President Donald J. Trump delivers another win for the American people as he, once again, holds the Fake News media accountable for their wrongdoing and deceit. CBS and Paramount Global realized the strength of this historic case and had no choice but to settle.”
