Grateful Dead, Francis Ford Coppola, Bonnie Raitt named 2024 Kennedy Center honorees

Francis Ford Coppola, the Grateful Dead, Bonnie Raitt and Arturo Sandoval were among those revealed as the 47th Kennedy Center honorees.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts named rock icons Grateful Dead, acclaimed singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt and legendary jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval among this year’s honorees, who will receive the 47th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements. The Apollo Theater will also be recognized during the December ceremony, which will take place on Dec. 8th and later air on CBS on Dec. 23.

Coppola is known for his work on The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, and he also produces wine and runs the literary magazine Zoetrope: All-Story. Bonnie Raitt has been awarded 13 Grammy awards and has made a name for herself as a social activist, while Arturo Sandoval received President Obama’s Presidential Medal of Freedom among numerous other awards.  The Grateful Dead has already been recognized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions.

Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein shared in a statement: “The Kennedy Center Honors recognizes artists who have made an extraordinary impact on the cultural life of our nation and continue to have an immeasurable influence on new generations.”  Kennedy Center president Deborah F. Rutter added: “Our honorees this year have each played an invaluable, pioneering role in developing American culture. Not with one act of art but with their decades-long devotion to pushing creative boundaries. In December, we are thrilled to pay special tribute to New York City’s renowned Apollo Theater on its 90th anniversary. Throughout its history, The Apollo has guided us and the world forward by discovering and nurturing raw talent, molding a unique cultural identity that defines American culture still today.”

Surviving Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh, 84, Mickey Hart, 80, Bill Kreutzmann, 78, and Bob Weir, 76, wrote in a collective statement: “It goes without saying that the Kennedy Center Honors represents the highest of reaches for artistic achievement. To be recognized alongside the artists who have in the past received this honor is beyond humbling. The Grateful Dead has always been about community, creativity, and exploration in music and presentation. We’ve always felt that the music we make embodies and imparts something beyond the notes and phrases being played — and that is something we are privileged to share with all who are drawn to what we do — so it also must be said that our music belongs as much to our fans, the Dead Heads, as it does to us. This honor, then, is as much theirs as ours.” Acknowledging their almost 60-year journey, the musicians also said that they’re “beyond grateful for this recognition .. Thank you, Kennedy Center, and to all the folks who had a hand in bringing us here, for this incredible honor.”

Coppola, 85, said in a statement: “I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to collaborate with great artists and wonderful people throughout my career, and I have never stopped learning. There is no greater honor than to be included along with those who inspired me, who I looked up to, and who gave me encouragement when times were dim. I am grateful to the Kennedy Center, my beloved colleagues, to those who equate beauty and truth, and to all the children of the world.”

Raitt, 74, wrote in a statement: “I am deeply honored and thrilled to have been chosen to receive one of this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. I have long been an admirer of the awards and have been so blessed to be able to participate in several shows honoring others. There is no higher level of esteem nor as delightful a celebration, and I want to extend my sincere thanks to all who have chosen me to receive this honor. I look forward to the upcoming ceremony and festivities, which I know will be one of my life’s peak experiences.”

The 47th Kennedy Center Honors will take place at the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington D.C. on Sunday, Dec. 8, and will later broadcast on CBS on Dec. 23. The ceremony will also stream on Paramount+.

Ex-Trump attorney Jenna Ellis agrees to cooperate in Arizona fake electors case

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced on Monday that Jenna Ellis, Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign attorney charged in Arizona as part of the fake electors scheme, has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for getting her charges dismissed.  Ellis is one of several former and current key aides to former President Trump who were charged in the case, including Rudy Giuliani, former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows and former Trump attorney John Eastman. All pleaded not guilty. Trump himself was not charged in the case.

AG Mayes shared a legal agreement that shows Ellis agreed to sit for interviews and turn over documents related to the scheme. The agreement also calls on Ellis to “testify completely and truthfully at any time and any place requested by the Arizona attorney general’s office”. Ellis signed the cooperation agreement Monday morning, according to the announcement, which said prosecutors are dropping the charges against her:  “This agreement represents a significant step forward in our case. I am grateful to Ms. Ellis for her cooperation with our investigation and prosecution. Her insights are invaluable and will greatly aid the state in proving its case in court.”

One month after the 2020 election, 11 Trump supporters convened at the Arizona GOP’s headquarters in Phoenix to sign a certificate claiming to be Arizona’s 11 electors to the Electoral College, though Biden won the state by 10,457 votes and state officials certified his electors. The state Republican Party documented the signing of the certificate in a social media post and sent it to Congress and the National Archives. Those accused of being “fake electors” and the others alleged to have been accomplices are charged with fraud, forgery, and conspiracy.

Ellis was also one of four defendants to take plea deals in the Georgia election interference case, in which Trump and 18 others pleaded not guilty last year to charges in a sweeping racketeering indictment for alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in that state.  Ellis pleaded guilty in Georgia to one count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings in that state’s election subversion case, and resulted in five years’ probation, a fine and community service in exchange for cooperating with prosecutors. In addition to Ellis, Georgia defendants Kenneth Chesebro, Sidney Powell and Scott Hall also took cooperation deals in that case.

At least four dead, 300,000 without power as Tropical Storm Debby hits Florida

At least four deaths have been confirmed as a result of Hurricane Debby, which made landfall today on Florida’s Big Bend at 7 a.m. ET as a Category 1 hurricane with 80 mph winds. The National Hurricane Center said that Debby was downgraded at 11 a.m. on Monday to a tropical storm, but its affects still continue to ravage the state as it moves inland with flooding rain, damaging winds and a life-threatening storm surge.

Debby, which made landfall as a Category 1 storm, touched down near Steinhatchee about 7 a.m. ET with winds estimated at 80 mph. After landfall, power outages skyrocketed to more than 300,000 utility customers in the Sunshine State, according to PowerOutage.us.

Officials confirmed two deaths in Dixie County, Florida, as Debby approached the coastline: a 38-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, both from Crawfordville, were killed in a crash just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday on US Highway 19 after their car lost control and struck a guardrail. Additionally, a 13-year-old boy was also killed about 8 a.m. Monday after a tree fell on a mobile home in Levy County; and a fourth victim, a 64-year-old man from New Albany, Mississippi, died after the tractor-trailer he was driving on southbound Interstate 75 near the Tampa Bypass Canal lost control on the wet roadway, according to Florida State Troopers.

Forecasters continue to warn residents of life-threatening storm surges in Florida and major flooding across southeastern states, with downpours and flooding hitting Florida’s Gulf Coast hard, with more than 10 inches of rain in some areas. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 61 counties expected to be affected by the storm. In a statement, his office said that 3,000 National Guard members have been mobilized.

The slow-moving storm is expected to dump extreme amounts of nearly 2 feet of rain on parts of Georgia and South Carolina by mid-week, with the National Hurricane Center is forecasting “potentially historic rainfall” across southeastern Georgia and South Carolina through Friday, causing widespread flash flooding and life-threatening conditions.

Governors in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina have all declared a state of emergency, and DeSantis shared in a statement: “I think what’s going to make this much different than what we had with Idalia is it is going to move very slowly once it enters Florida – it’s going to be southern Georgia, northern Florida – and it is just going to drop an inordinate amount of water on the north-central Florida region.”

1 deputy killed, 2 other deputies injured in ambush in Florida

One deputy was killed and two other deputies were injured Friday night in central Florida when they were “ambushed” after responding to a disturbance Friday night.  Lake County Sheriff’s Peyton Grinnell said during a news conference that the shooting happened at a home in Eustis about 40 miles north of Orlando around 8 p.m., after deputies responded to a disturbance call.

Grinnell said at the news conference: “We went to a disturbance at one house – the initial call was for a disturbance – and then, while we were on that scene, somebody at that scene told the deputies they needed to go to the other house, that that’s where there was a problem happening.” Deputies saw what appeared to be a door kicked in, so they entered the residence to conduct a well-being check, when they walked into an ambush, Grinnell said, and were “met with a hail of gunfire ..It was a very violent scene”

The first deputy who entered the house was injured and trapped inside while another deputy was able to get out. Other law enforcement responded, and when they went to rescue the trapped deputy, they were again met with gunfire and another deputy was struck, the sheriff said.  One deputy who was shot in the shoulder and did not require surgery, and was in stable condition early Saturday. A second deputy was shot multiple times in the armpit and stomach area and was in serious/critical condition after surgery early Saturday. The third deputy who was trapped inside the home, has died.

The rescue team involved tactical equipment to tear down walls in a desperate attempt to rescue the deputy who was trapped inside the residence.  Once the scene was secured, deputies found multiple weapons inside, including handguns and long guns.   All three suspects in the shooting were also killed, Herrell said. No official cause of death has been determined, however the sheriff’s office said their gunshot wounds appear to be self-inflicted.

Lake County Sheriff’s Lt. John Herrell identified the slain deputy as 28-year-old Master Deputy Sheriff Bradley Michael Link, whom he described as a five-year veteran, joining the sheriff’s office in 2019. Herrell said Link was a “good deputy,” and became emotional while speaking about him during a press conference on Saturday: “Deputy Link wasn’t even supposed to be there. He wasn’t even part of the road patrol unit. He heard the call go out, he went there to assist .. Brad, as our Sheriff’s Office family knew him, touched the lives of all who were blessed enough to work with him; his contributions and the impact of this loss will not soon be forgotten.”

5-year-old boy dies after wind gust sends bounce house airborne in Maryland

A 5-year-old boy died and a second child was injured when a strong wind gust sent a bounce house airborne during a baseball game Friday night in Waldorf, Maryland. Waldorf is located about 30 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 56 miles south of Baltimore.

Officials in Charles County said that the incident occurred at about 9:20 p.m. local time at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, during a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs game. Several children were playing inside the bounce house adjacent to the playing field when a wind gust sent it about 15 to 20 feet into the air. The children fell out of the bounce house before it landed on the playing field.

A 5-year-old boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died, while a second child was airlifted to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Emergency personnel who were stationed at the stadium for the game, trainers from the baseball team and volunteer first responders in attendance all began administering medical care.

The Blue Crabs play in the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball; the team said that Saturday’s game and all corresponding baseball activities were canceled. Courtney Knichel, general manager of the Blue Crabs, released a statement saying: “Our entire organization shares our condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child, and concern for the child who was injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”

Reuben B. Collins II Esq., the Charles County Government commissioner president, in a statement: “We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time. We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care.”

Halle Berry has left Ryan Murphy’s new legal drama All’s Fair for Hulu, with Variety reporting that Berry, 57, is no longer attached to the series as a star and executive producer. The outlet cited a scheduling conflict as the reason she parted ways with the production.

Justin Timberlake pleads not guilty in DWI case, has license suspended in NY

Justin Timberlake pleaded not guilty plea to a revised misdemeanor charge in connection to his arrest for driving while intoxicated in Sag Harbor, New York this past June.  Timberlake’s drivers license was also suspended in the state of New York.

Timberlake, 43, was performing in Antwerp, Belgium over the weekend and appeared virtually on Friday in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court in New York before Justice Carl Irace. During the hearing, Irace urged caution and threatened Timberlake’s counsel with a gag order, referring to comments made outside of court to the media by the singer’s lawyer, Edward Burke. Burke previously disagreed with the claim that Timberlake was intoxicated, disputing to reporters that the police made “very significant errors” and asserting that “he was not intoxicated.”

Burke told reporters after court regarding the suspended license: “This is standard procedure with every DWI case. In New York, the suspension stays during the pendency of the case and is resolved at the end. Other states have similar regulations. .. We are very confident that charge, that criminal charge, will be dismissed.”

Timberlake was pulled over and arrested in June in Sag Harbor, with police stating that he drove through a stop sign and swerved into another lane. Authorities determined the pop star was driving drunk, had bloodshot, glassy eyes and “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” emanating from his breath, according to the criminal complaint. He also had slowed speech, was unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on a field sobriety test, the complaint said. Timberlake told the arresting officer he had only one drink, according to the complaint.

A further conference hearing in the case is scheduled for August 9, which Timberlake is not required to attend. The judge asked the singer’s attorney to find a date when Timberlake can appear in person, perhaps as soon as Sept. 13.
