Justin Timberlake arrested and arraigned on DWI charges in the Hamptons, NY

Justin Timberlake was been released from police custody after being arrested for driving while intoxicated or impaired in the Hamptons, NY on Monday night.

PEOPLE reported that Timberlake, 43, appeared in court for his arraignment in handcuffs on Tuesday, and was released shortly afterward.  Law enforcement did not confirm Timberlake’s charges to the outlet, but sources told PEOPLE that the singer was pulled over while driving to his friend’s house after having dinner at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, adding that “nobody was hurt.” NBC News reports that Timberlake claimed he had just “one martini” before he was pulled over; however, according to the complaint written by Sag Harbor Village police officer Michael Arkinson, once police spoke to Timberlake they said it was clear the motorist was not in any shape to drive. Police ascertained that Timberlake was “operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition in that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”  Timberlake was then arrested on suspicion of impaired driving early Tuesday in the affluent Hamptons area of Long Island.

The Sag Harbor Police Department issued a statement reading: “On June 18, 2024, at 12:37 AM, Justin R. Timberlake, age 43, of Tennessee, was observed operating a 2025 BMW southbound on Madison Street, failing to stop at a duly posted stop sign and failing to maintain his lane of travel. A traffic stop was initiated by a Police Officer from the Sag Harbor Village Police Department and upon investigation it was determined that Mr. Timberlake was operating his vehicle in an intoxicated condition. Mr. Timberlake was placed under arrest, processed, and held overnight for morning arraignment. Mr. Timberlake was arraigned at the Sag Harbor Village Justice Court on June 18, 2024, at 9:30 AM where he was released on his own recognizance.”

Timberlake is currently on the road with his first tour in five years, the Forget Tomorrow World Tour, in support of his latest album, Everything I Thought It Was, which dropped on March 15. He is on a brief break in New York this week following his Miami tour stop on Saturday, June 15, and is next scheduled to play Chicago’s United Center on June 21-22, before a two-night stint at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on June 25-26.

Timberlake is due back in Sag Harbor court for a hearing regarding the DWI charges on Friday, July 26.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disbands Israeli war cabinet

Officials tell The Associated Press and CNN that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dissolved his war cabinet, which was responsible for key decisions relating to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The war cabinet, set up five days after the Hamas-led terrorist attacks against Israel on October 7, had five members: Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, opposition leader Benny Gantz, and two “observers,” Ron Dermer and Gadi Eisenkot. Israeli official said that decision-making will now move back to the government’s main security cabinet, adding that Netanyahu “will hold smaller forums on sensitive matters.”

Netanyahu’s decision comes just over a week after opposition leader Benny Gantz withdrew from the cabinet, stating that the prime minister was making “total victory impossible.” In announcing his resignation, Gantz said the government needs to put the return of the hostages seized Oct. 7 by Hamas “above political survival.” Gantz said in announcing his resignation: “Months after the October disaster, the situation in the country and in the decision-making cabinet has changed. Netanyahu and his partners have turned unity into a void call who has no cover. Fateful strategic decisions are met with hesitancy and procrastination due to political considerations. Netanyahu is preventing us from progressing to a real victory. That is why we are leaving the emergency government today with a heavy heart, but with a whole heart.”

Netanyahu’s wartime decision-making has been criticized, with those saying he has been influenced by ultranationalists in his government who oppose a deal that would bring about a cease-fire in exchange for the release of hostages. Netanyahu has denied the accusation, saying he has the country’s best interests in mind.

More than 37,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its offensive in the enclave following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks, in which some 1,200 people were killed and around 250 others were taken hostage, according to Israeli officials.

Surgeon General calls for warning labels on social media platforms

In a New York Times opinion essay published Monday, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy called for social media companies to be required to use safety warning labels, and asked Congress to take action in ordering social media platforms to post warning labels similar to those attached to tobacco or alcohol products

Murthy wrote in the Times op-ed that statistics are clear about the effect social media has on adolescents, particularly those who are facing anxiety and depression issues. Murthy cited research that shows social media could be negatively impacting youth mental health, and added that a surgeon general’s warning on social media platforms could raise awareness for parents about the potential harm of the platforms (per USA TODAY.) He said that while warning labels only won’t protect young people it’s a first step in the acknowledgment of its dangers.

Murthy wrote: “The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms .. One of the worst things for a parent is to know your children are in danger yet be unable to do anything about it. That is how parents tell me they feel when it comes to social media — helpless and alone in the face of toxic content and hidden harms.”

The Surgeon General said that the average time adolescents spend on social media had increased to 4.8 hours a day in the summer of 2023, adding: “it is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires Congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proven safe .. To be clear, a warning label would not, on its own, make social media safe for young people. The advisory I issued a year ago about social media and young people’s mental health included specific recommendations.”

Carrie Underwood and family ‘unharmed’ after fire at their Tennessee haome

Carrie Underwood and her family are “unharmed” after a fire was safely extinguished at their Tennessee home on Sunday night. Underwood and her husband, Mike Fisher, live at the remote home in Tennessee with their two sons — Isaiah, 9, and Jacob, 5.

According to local Nashville news outlet WKRN News 2, crews were dispatched to Underwood’s Williamson County property on June 16 after responding to a “fully-involved fire” in the garage that began around 9:40 p.m. Williamson County Fire Rescue stated that Station 21 was dispatched to a fire alarm in that district, with the call upgraded to a structure fire “almost immediately,” according to a post on Facebook that read: “crews from all eight of our stations responded. Fairview fire provided a tanker and crew as well.”

Williamson County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Dinah Wade confirmed to the Tennessean that firefighters were able to douse the fire fast thanks to a 10,000-gallon water tank that was already on the premises, and “were able to knock down the fire quickly to prevent spread into the house. Firefighters continue to put out hotspots to prevent further spread. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There are no injuries at this time.”  The fire appears to have been caused by an off-road UTV and spread into the garage, but authorities are still investigating to determine the exact cause.

A spokesperson for Underwood said in a statement: “there was a fire on the property on Sunday night, which was quickly contained. There was no fire damage to the primary residence, and the family and their pets were unharmed.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs returns key to New York City following request by Mayor Eric Adams

Per a request from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Sean “Diddy” Combs returned his key to the city last week. Adams requested that Combs return the key after the 2016 video showing the music mogul attacking his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, went public. The mayor’s office confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the city received the key on June 10th; Adams initially awarded Combs the key in September 2023.

Adam’s office had originally requested the key’s return on June 4 via a letter from the mayor sent to Combs’ offices in New York and Los Angeles, which stated that Adams was “deeply disturbed” by the attack and added, “I strongly condemn these actions and stand in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. Our city has worked tirelessly to make sure survivors are heard and seen by our administration.”

Security video from March 2016 obtained by CNN (which the network made public on May 17) shows Combs attacking his ex-girlfriend Cassie in a hotel hallway near an elevator, grabbing her and throwing her onto the ground. He appeared to kick her twice and drag her by her sweatshirt. Later in the footage, he returned to kick her again, and then threw an object from a nearby table at her.

Following the video’s release, Combs apologized on social media, saying he took “full responsibility for my actions in that video” and that he “was disgusted then when I did it, and I’m disgusted now.” Ventura accused him of repeatedly raping and physically abusing her during the course of their relationship in a lawsuit last November, but settled the case shortly after the filing. Combs has since faced multiple new lawsuits this year, accusing him of rape, sexual assault and sex trafficking. He has denied all of the allegations.

2 children among 9 injured in shooting at recreational splash pad in Michigan

Two children were among nine people injured after a shooter opened fire at a splash pad in a Detroit suburb over the weekend. Police describe the incident, which took place on Saturday afternoon in Rochester Hills, Mich., as a “random” shooting and trying to determine a motive. The alleged gunman, 42-year white Michael William Nash from Shelby Township, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a home he shared with his mother.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said during a news conference that an 8-year-old boy was shot in the head and his 4-year-old brother was shot in the leg; the older boy remains in critical condition, while the younger child is in stable condition. Their mother, 39, was also among the victims after being wounded in the abdomen and leg; she was listed in stable condition. The other adult victims ranged in age from 30 to 78.

Sheriff Bouchard said Saturday that the suspect pulled up to the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad just after 5 p.m. at a city park featuring a recreation area. The suspect left his vehicle, and opened fire from roughly 20 feet away with a Glock 9mm handgun, reloading multiple times and firing “potentially 28 times.” Bouchard said the attack appeared to be random, with at least one witness reporting that the shooter appeared to use two hand guns during the attack, but that has not yet been confirmed. Bouchard said police will continue to investigate for a motive and look for shell casings, but also said there appeared to be no connection between the shooter and the victims.

Police Chief Banks said during a media briefing: “We’re very disappointed and angry with these events. My condolences go out to the families of the deceased.”
