‘Smile’ tops North American box office with $22M in its opening weekend

Paramount’s “Smile,” a horror movie starring Sosie Bacon and Jessie T. Usher, is the No. 1 movie in North America, earning $22 million over the weekend.  ‘Smile,’ Parker Finn’s debut feature film, cost just $17 million to make before marketing.  ‘Smile’ follows a therapist (Sosie Bacon) treating a graduate student (Caitlin Stasey) who recently witnessed a gruesome suicide. Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert and Kal Penn co-star.

The marketing campaign for ‘Smile’ went viral in recent days after Paramount hired several people to maintain the film’s signature creepy smile when sitting behind home base at several major league baseball games. Paramount president of production Chris Aronson said: “It was the exclamation point on a great campaign.”

Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling fell to the No. 2 spot wit a 62 percent drop, and putting the movie’s 10-day domestic total at $32.8 million.

Tri-Star’s The Woman King came in No. 3 with $7 million, down just 36 percent in its third weekend for a domestic total nearing $47 million.

Universal and Nicholas Stoller’s high-profile Bros, the first gay romantic comedy from a major Hollywood studio which cost $22 million to make, opened in a disappointing 4th place. Bros, starring Billy Eichner, was embraced by critics following its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival.  It earned a 95 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it an A CinemaScore.

National Archives tells House committee it has not yet retrieved all records from Trump administration

The National Archives and Records Administration told House Democrats that it has not yet retrieved all the records from officials in the Trump administration that it should have under federal law, and would consult with the Justice Department on further action.

Debra Steidel Wall, the acting archivist of the United States, said in a letter to House Oversight Committee chair Carolyn Maloney that some White House staff used “non-official electronic messaging accounts” for official business that were not copied or forwarded into their official accounts, which is required under federal law.  She told Congress: “While there is no easy way to establish absolute accountability, we do know that we do not have custody of everything we should.  The Archives has been able to obtain such records from a number of officials and will continue to pursue the return of similar types of presidential records from former officials. As appropriate, NARA would consult with the Department of Justice on whether ‘to initiate an action for the recovery of records unlawfully removed,’ as established under the Federal Records Act.”

Committee chair Maloney responded to Wall’s letter, saying it’s “outrageous” that the records, which are property of the U.S. government, are unaccounted for 20 months since the end of the Trump administration.  She wrote in a statement: “Former President Trump and his senior staff have shown an utter disregard for the rule of law and our national security by failing to return presidential records as the law requires.”

The Archives recovered 15 boxes of records from Mar-a-Lago in mid-January and records marked classified were found in 14 of them, according to the Justice Department. The documents included: 184 documents bearing classification markings, including 67 marked confidential, 92 marked secret and 25 marked top secret. Trump turned over an additional 38 unique documents with classification markings to the Justice Department in June and, after the FBI executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in August, roughly 100 more documents with classification markings were uncovered.

Death toll from Hurricane Ian reaches 87 as search-and-rescue operation continues

As of Sunday, the number of fatalities in the wake of Hurricane Ian has climbed to 87, and federal emergency management officials launched their largest ever search-and-rescue effort. The number of fatalities was expected to continue to climb as additional deaths were investigated after last week’s storm. The deaths so far have include 83 in Florida, and four in North Carolina, where Hurricane Ian ended up after striking the coast of South Carolina on Friday. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden announced they will travel to devastated areas on Wednesday.

Federal Emergency Management Administration chief Deanne Criswell said that search and rescue efforts were underway and that the U.S. response was likely to be unprecedented. FEMA will work with Florida officials to search for people who remain unaccounted for after Hurricane Ian, which brought catastrophic floods, according to Criswell.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a news conference that at least 1,100 rescues had been made in Florida since the storm struck, telling reporters: “There’s been a great outpouring of support and I’ve seen a lot of resilience in this community of people that want to pick themselves up and they want to get their communities back on their feet. We’ll be here and we’ll be helping every step of the way.”  Even after Ian was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, it left flooding and power outages across the Carolinas. At least four people died in North Carolina, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Saturday.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rico is still dealing with the fallout from Hurricane Fiona, which has resulted in 25 fatalities since it hit the U.S. territory last month. The White House announced late Saturday that the Bidens will visit Puerto Rico on Monday.  Hurricane Fiona struck the island on Sep. 16, flooding towns and leaving residents with collapsed bridges. Fiona was the second storm since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico five years ago, from which the island still hadn’t fully recovered. Biden said: “To the people of Puerto Rico, we’re not gone away; I am committed to you and the recovery of the island. We’ll stand by you for however long it takes to get it done.”

On Sunday, portions of multiple Florida counties, including parts of Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, Hernando, Hillsborough, Lee, Levy, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, St. Johns, and Sarasota, remained under mandatory evacuation orders. The number of utility customers without power in Florida and in other South Atlantic states remained well under 1 million Sunday.

Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine in Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool 3’

Ryan Reynolds shared on social media that Deadpool 3 will feature Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine, and also shard the sequel’s release date — Sept. 6, 2024.  In the video clip on Twitter, Reynolds speaks to the camera while Jackman walks by in the background. Reynolds asks Jackman if he’ll play Wolverine one more time, with him responding, “Yeah, sure, Ryan.”  Wolverine’s claws slash the Deadpool logo, before revealing the film’s release date.

Deadpool 3 will be the first Deadpool film made since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. Deadpool was part of the X-Men universe at Fox, and introduced Reynolds’ character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and included other character cameos in Reynolds’ films.

Jackman previously stated that 2017’s film Logan was his last appearance as the character. Logan was set in the future, as Wolverine’s powers were declining, so there is room for him to appear prior to the events of that film.
