FDA authorizes single booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine for ages 5 through 11

On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) authorized the use of a single booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer-BioNTech for children ages 5 through 11.

FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert M. Califf said: “While it has largely been the case that COVID-19 tends to be less severe in children than adults, the omicron wave has seen more kids getting sick with the disease and being hospitalized, and children may also experience longer term effects, even following initially mild disease.” Califf said that the authorization for the single dose in the youngest children eligible for the vaccine provides “continued protection against COVID-19,” adding that “vaccination continues to be the most effective way to prevent COVID-19 and its severe consequences… and it is safe.”

Pfizer in late April asked the FDA for the emergency authorization to cover booster shots for children 5 to 11.  Earlier that month, Pfizer and BioNTech released clinical trial data from 140 children between the ages of 5 and 11 who had received a booster shot showing a six-fold increase in neutralizing antibodies against COVID-19.

Last October, federal regulators first authorized use of the vaccine for children between 5 and 11; and late last month, a second booster shot of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine was approved for those 50 and older.

President Biden and First Lady visit Buffalo New York after mass supermarket shooting, says ‘white supremacy has no place in America’

During a trip to Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday to visit with families of the victims killed in a mass shooting over the weekend, President Biden said that White supremacy is a “poison” that “has no place in America.”  The President and First Lady Jill Biden also met with community leaders, and visited a memorial site for the victims where they added a bouquet of flowers and had a moment of silence.

The attack on Saturday at the TOPS Market in Buffalo killed 10 people and injured three others, making it the deadliest of multiple attacks that occurred in the United States over the weekend. Police say they’re investigating the shooting as a hate crime. Authorities say the suspected shooter, 18-year-old Payton Gendron, was motivated by hate when he opened fire at the store and had written a lengthy manifesto before the attack in which he communicated racist views against people of color. Gendron traveled about 200 miles to Buffalo from his home in another part of New York. Authorities said they believe that Gendron had planned on carrying out more shootings in other locations before he was stopped at the TOPS store.

The President called the shooting an act of domestic terrorism:  “White supremacy is a poison, it’s a poison … running through our body politic…And it’s been allowed to grow and fester right before our eyes. No more, no more. We need to say as clearly and as forcefully as we can that the ideology of White supremacy has no place in America. None.  In America, evil will not win, I promise you. Hate will not prevail. White supremacy will not have the last word. The evil did come to Buffalo and it’s come to all too many places, manifested in gunmen who massacred innocent people in the name of hateful and perverse ideology, rooted in fear and racism. It’s taken so much.”

Edie Falco to play Pete Davidson’s mom in Peacock series ‘Bupkis’

Edie Falco has been cast opposite Pete Davidson in the upcoming Peacock comedy series “Bupkis.” The actress and Davidson made the announcement during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation. “Bupkis” was picked up straight-to-series at Peacock back in April and is described as a ‘heightened, fictionalized version of Davidson’s real life.’  Per Peacock, it will combine grounded storytelling with absurd elements from the worldview for which Davidson is well known. Falco will star as Davidson’s mother.

Davidson will not only star in “Bupkis” will serves as co-writer and executive producer, along with Dave Sirus and Judah Miller will also write and executive produce, and Miller serving as showrunner. Saturday Night Live head Lorne Michaels, Andrew Singer, and Erin David of Broadway Video will also executive produce.

Falco is best known for her role in the iconic HBO series “The Sopranos,” for which she earned three Emmy Awards. She is also known for her starring role in Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie,” which saw her pick up another Emmy in 2010. Most recently she played Hilary Clinton in the third season of “American Crime Story” at FX, “Impeachment.”

Davidson’s real life has been the basis for an onscreen project before; he previously starred in the film “The King of Staten Island” which he co-wrote with director Judd Apatow and Dave Sirus.  The film was inspired in part by aspects of Davidson’s life, with Marisa Tomei played his mother in that film.

‘Black Mirror’ returning to Netflix for highly-anticipated Season 6

Netflix has picked up another season of the dystopian-anthology series ‘Black Mirror’, nearly three years since new episodes last aired.

Season 6 of Black Mirror is still in its early development and the casting phase. The new season will reportedly have more episodes than Season 5, which was comprised of just three new episodes– Striking Vipers with Anthony Mackie and Yahya Abdul-Matteen II, Smithereens with ‘Sherlock’ star Andrew Scott, and Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, which starred Miley Cyrus.  The first two seasons of Black Mirror were also comprised of just three episodes, but Seasons 3 and 4 each had 6 episodes.

Sources close to the production tell Variety that Black Mirror Season 6 will adopt a more cinematic approach; each episode of Season 6 is rumored to be thought of as an ‘individual film,’ which hints that each episode will be over an hour in length. However, content of the episodes themselves remain unclear.

A premiere date for Black Mirror Season Six has not yet been announced.

Baby formula maker Abbott reaches agreement with FDA to reopen largest domestic plant amid nationwide shortage

Infant formula maker Abbott have reached an agreement with U.S. health officials to restart production at its largest domestic factory, hoping to ease a nationwide shortage tied to the plant’s shutdown earlier this year.  The terms of the agreement reached with the Food and Drug Administration, which has been investigating safety problems at the Sturgis, Michigan, facility, were not immediately disclosed by Abbott.

The Biden administration said the agreement not only serves to reopen the largest domestic manufacturing plant of infant formula, but will ease import rules to allow supplies from overseas. The consent decree is a binding legal agreement between the company and the federal government. Abbott has said it will take at least eight weeks to begin shipping new product to stores after production resumes.

The Biden administration has come under intense pressure over the last week to do more to ease the shortage of formula. Abbott’s plant came under scrutiny earlier this year after four infants became sick with bacterial infections after consuming powdered formula from the Michigan factory; two of those babies died. By February, the company halted production and recalled several brands of formula, which in turn strained the supply chain, causing disruptions and parents stockpiling.

White House reveals plans to protect and expand affordable housing amid rising inflation

On Monday, the White House announced steps to increase and protect affordable housing nationwide by using federal funds as an incentive for reforms in a move to counter rising inflation. The White House plan will use funding from the bipartisan infrastructure law to control housing costs.

The plan acknowledges that a shortage of available housing and rising rent is helping to fuel inflation. Biden’s administration says the crisis has slowly built up over the past five years to create a deficit in affordable housing and exacerbate rent, and was made worse due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The White House said in a statement Monday: “The president’s plan includes legislative and administrative actions that will help close America’s housing supply shortfall in five years, starting with the creation and preservation of hundreds of thousands of affordable housing units in the next three years. When aligned with other policies to reduce housing costs and ensure affordability, such as rental assistance and down payment assistance, closing the gap will mean more affordable rents and more attainable homeownership for Americans in every community.”

The White House added: “Today’s rising housing costs are years in the making. Fewer new homes were built in the decade following the Great Recession than in any decade since the 1960s — constraining housing supply and failing to keep pace with demand and household formation. This mismatch between housing supply and housing demand grew during the pandemic. While estimates vary, Moody’s Analytics estimates that the shortfall in the housing supply is more than 1.5 million homes nationwide.”

Administration officials said that the president’s proposed $5.8 trillion 2023 budget includes investments in housing inventory that would lead to an addition of 500,000 homes nationwide. The White House said it’s working with the Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Commerce to address supply chain disruption for building materials.

Sports Illustrated has unveiled the cover models for its 2022 swimsuit issue: Kim Kardashian, singer Ciara and models Yumi Nu and Maye Musk appear on four new covers of the magazine.

Kardashian, 41, was photographed by Greg Swales at photoshoot in the Dominican Republic. In an interview, Kardashian said it was a surprise to be selected for the Sports Illustrated cover: “I vividly remember Tyra Banks on the cover and women with curves. I remember thinking that is so cool. But, I still didn’t think I would have — I thought you had to be a professional model and a runway model. It was always really young girls. I don’t want to date myself or sound old but in my 40s? That’s crazy! I never thought in a million years I would be shooting one myself.”

Ciara, 36, was photographed by Ben Watts in Barbados. The singer said appearing on the cover was “a big dream come true” and talked about having the freedom to pursue her goals.  Said Ciara: “When you’re pursuing your dream, all it takes is one person to believe and that’s you. If you believe, there’s all the chance in the world… There’s a lot more I want to accomplish and I have to have that ‘I believe in me, why not you’ attitude.”

The 25-year-old Nu is a Japanese-Dutch model, and the niece of DJ Steve Aoki and model and actress Devon Aoki. She made her Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue debut in 2021 and was the first plus-size model to appear on the cover of Vogue Japan.
