CrossFit CEO Apologizes For Racially Insensitive Tweets As Reebok Ends Partnership With The Brand

CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman made an insensitive remark about George Floyd on Twitter, Reebok and several affiliates announced they were ending their partnerships. Since then, Glassman has offered an apology on the social media platform.” data-reactid=”20″ type=”text”>After CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman made an insensitive remark about George Floyd on Twitter, Reebok and several affiliates announced they were ending their partnerships. Now Glassman has offered an apology on Twitter via the @CrossFit handle. “I, CrossFit HQ, and the CrossFit community will not stand for racism. I made a mistake by the words I chose yesterday. My heart is deeply saddened by the pain it has caused. It was a mistake, not racist but a mistake. Floyd is a hero in the black community and not just a victim. I should have been sensitive to that and wasn’t. I apologize for that. I was trying to stick it to the @IHME_UW for their invalidated models resulting in needless, economy-wrecking, life-wrecking lockdown, and when I saw they were announcing modeling a solution to our racial crisis, I was incredulous, angry, and overly emotional. Involving George Floyd’s name in that effort was wrong.”

On June 4, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation posted a tweet stating, “Racism and discrimination are critical public health issues that demand an urgent response, wherever they occur.” Glassman responded to the tweet: “It’s FLOYD-19.

Reebok responded to Glassman’s remark by ending its partnership with CrossFit, saying in a statement: “Our partnership with CrossFit HQ comes to an end later this year. Recently, we have been in discussions regarding a new agreement, however, in light of recent events, we have made the decision to end our partnership with CrossFit HQ. We will fulfill our remaining contractual obligations in 2020. We owe this to the CrossFit Games competitors, fans and the community.”

President Trump Pledges To Maintain Funding For Police Departments Despite Protests

On Monday, President Donald Trump pledged to maintain funding for police departments in the United States, despite growing calls for cuts to law enforcement budgets.

“There won’t be defunding, there won’t be dismantling of our police,” Trump told a roundtable of state, federal, and local law enforcement officials at the White House on Monday. “We want to make sure we don’t have any bad actors in there … but 99 percent … of them are great great people and have done jobs that are record setting.”

Demonstrations over the May 25 death of George Floyd is giving way to a growing movement to make his case a turning point in race relations and policing, with some protesters and some liberal Democrats calling for police budgets to be slashed. Moderate Democrats have distanced themselves from the proposal, including presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was jeered by protesters over the weekend after telling them he opposed their demands for cuts in the city’s police department.

Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Trump “is appalled by the defund the police movement.” She noted that the President is “taking a look at various” proposals in response to Floyd’s death, but offered no specifics as to what measures he was considering.

Lifetime Cuts Ties With Abby Lee Miller Of “Dance Moms” After Allegations Of Racist Comments

Lifetime is cutting ties with Dance Moms‘ Abby Lee Miller after accusations of racism surfaced against the reality star. The network will no longer move forward with Millers’s planned new show, Abby’s Virtual Dance Off, a spinoff series to Dance Moms scheduled to premiere later this summer.  In addition, should Dance Moms be renewed for a 9th season, Miller will no longer be part of the series.

Earlier this week, Miller posted a (now-deleted) black square on Instagram for #BlackOutTuesday in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Shortly thereafter, Adriana Smith, who appeared on Season 8 of Dance Moms with her daughter Kamryn, responded with her own Instagram, writing: “I couldn’t think of a more perfect day to address my experience with Abby Lee Miller. Wanna know the truth?” Smith shared a series of posts from her Notes app, writing that at one time, Miller allegedly made a number of racist remarks towards Kamryn. “A statement from her that sticks in my mind to this day during my time on DMS8 is ‘I know you grew up in the HOOD with only a box of 8 crayons, but I grew up in the Country Club with a box of 64 – don’t be stupid,'” Smith recalled, adding: “This to me shows that you think you are better than me and in higher rank and all together superior to ME. This to me shows that you don’t give a f— about me or where I came from.” The mother also alleged that at one point, her daughter had heard Miller say that she was only included on the show for a “sprinkle of color.”.

In a statement, Miller apologized to the family, writing, “I realize that racism can come not just from hate, but also from ignorance. No matter the cause, it is harmful, and it is my fault. While I cannot change the past or remove the harm I have done, I promise to educate myself, learn, grow, and do better. While I hope to one day earn your forgiveness, I recognize that words alone are not enough. I understand it takes time and genuine change.”

Cate Blanchett Says She’s “Fine” After Injuring Her Head With Chainsaw During Quarantine

Cate Blanchett  revealed she cut her head with a chainsaw during quarantine, but is “fine.”

The Oscar winner shared her experience on former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s podcast, A Podcast of One’s Own, May 27. However, Blanchett said she’s totally fine, and the injury was minor. “I had a bit of a chainsaw accident yesterday, which sounds very, very exciting, but it wasn’t,” she explained. “Apart from the little nick to my head, I’m fine.” It is unclear what Blanchett was doing with the chainsaw when she was injured, but it took place at her estate in England where she and her family have been self-isolating amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Majority Of Minneapolis City Council Backs Dismantling Police Department

A majority of the Minneapolis City Council agreed Sunday to dismantle the city’s police department after the in-custody killing of George Floyd. Councilman Jeremiah Ellison said the council would work to disband the department in its “current iteration. The plan has to start somewhere. We are not going to hit the eject button without a plan so today was the announcement of the formulation of that plan.” Ellison said that eight or nine of the council members have agreed to the move.

During a community meeting earlier on Sunday, council President Lisa Bender called the city’s relationship with the department “toxic” and vowed to “recreate systems of public safety that actually keep us safe. Our efforts at incremental reform have failed — period. Our commitment is to do what’s necessary to keep every single member of our community safe and to tell the truth that Minneapolis police are not doing that.”

Mayor Jacob Frey said in a statement that he would work “relentlessly” with city’s police chief, Medaria Arradondo, toward “deep, structural reform” and to address “systemic racism in police culture. We’re ready to dig in and enact more community-led public safety strategies on behalf of our city. But I do not support abolishing the Minneapolis Police Department.”

The announcement comes nearly two weeks after the killing of Floyd, who died when a police officer, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. The killing was captured on video by a bystander and sparked massive protests across the United States.

Emma Watson Says She’s “Still Learning” After Receiving Backlash For Black Tuesday Post

Actress Emma Watson responded to Twitter backlash her support of the #BlackoutTuesday initiative on her Instagram account. Watson, a UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador and vocal supporter of the Time’s Up movement, joined Tuesday’s blackout across social media and posted three black squares framed by white borders. Each of them was accompanied by the hashtags #blackouttuesday, #theshowmustbepaused, #amplifymelanatedvoices and #amplifyblackvoices.

Some fans responding with comments such as, “Love her lack of energy! go girl give us nothing!” and “Don’t be shy use your platform some more.” By midnight on Tuesday, Watson wrote three more posts reflecting on white privilege and systemic racism. “I was holding off posting until #blackouttuesday ended in the U.K.,” she explained, and included a statement from Watson that read, in part: “White supremacy is one of the systems of hierarchy and dominance, of exploitation and oppression, that is tightly stitched into society. As a white person, I have benefited from this.”

“I’m still learning about the many ways I unconsciously support and uphold a system that is structurally racist,” she added, before promising to share resources for “researching, learning, listening” on her Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Facebook Begins Labeling ‘State-Controlled’ Media

Facebook has begun labeling content produced by media outlets it says are under state control, enacting a policy the social network first announced in October. Posts from at least 18 outlets including Russia Today, China’s People’s Daily and Iran’s Press TV now carry notices to users that they are “state-controlled media.” Ads from state-controlled publishers will also be labeled starting later this year. The labels will initially be shown to U.S. Facebook users and roll out to other countries over time.

In a blog post, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, wrote:  “We’re providing greater transparency into these publishers because they combine the influence of a media organization with the strategic backing of a state, and we believe people should know if the news they read is coming from a publication that may be under the influence of a government.”

Facebook will also begin barring state-controlled outlets from buying advertising in the U.S. later this summer. Gleicher said that decision was to provide an extra layer of protection against various types of foreign influence ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Facebook’s decision to flag state-controlled media is part of the company’s broader effort to avoid a repeat of 2016, when the company failed to curb misinformation and foreign interference in the U.S. presidential election.

George Floyd Honored During Memorial Service As Protests Around The Country Continue

A memorial was held Thursday for George Floyd, the black man who died last week after a police officer pressed a knee into his neck while detaining him in Minneapolis, triggering protests across the country.

Artwork depicting Floyd saying, “I can breathe now” was placed in front of a golden casket and flower bouquets. Floyd’s brother Philonise shared memories of growing up together, saying, “All these people came to see my brother. And that’s amazing to me that he touched so many people’s hearts. Because he’s been touching our hearts. Everybody wants justice,” he continued, referring to those who have been protesting in the streets. “We want justice for George. He’s gonna get it!”

Mourners inside the North Central University sanctuary wore masks, some with pictures of Floyd on them. In a statement, the university said it took steps “to ensure appropriate measures will be in place for health and safety related to COVID-19.”

Floyd, 46, died May 25 after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned him to the ground. Video filmed by bystanders shows Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nearly 9 minutes. Floyd’s death set off nationwide protests against police brutality that have continued since the encounter.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Cast Donates $100,000 Towards Bail Relief For Protesters

The cast of NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has made a $100,000 donation to the National Bail Fund Network.

Dan Goor, co-creator of the show, made the announcement on Twitter to “condemn” the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of Minneapolis police. “The cast and showrunner of ‘Brooklyn 99’ condemn the murder of George Floyd and support the many people who are protesting police brutality nationally. Together we have made a $100,000 donation to The National Bail Fund Network. We encourage you to look up your local bail fund: the National Bail Fund Network is an organization that can lead you to them. #blacklivesmatter.”

Stephanie Beatriz, who stars on the show as Det. Rosa Diaz, made a personal donation to the fund as well. She also urged any actors who portray police officers on television to do the same. “I’m an actor who plays a detective on tv,” she tweeted. “If you currently play a cop? If you make tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in residuals from playing a cop? I’ll let you do the math.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is produced by Universal Television and it also stars Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, and Melissa Fumero. The series was canceled by Fox in 2018, but picked up by NBC shortly thereafter.

Amanda Seales Leaves ‘The Real’ 6 Months After Joining As Co-Host

After six months as a co-host on The Real, Amanda Seales is leaving the show.  The 38-year-old actress announced her departure during an Instagram Live, explaining that she wasn’t able to fully use her ‘voice’ and found the talk show lacking black voices ‘at the top.’

Seales said that her decision to leave had nothing to do with her co-hosts, Loni Love, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jeannie Mai and Adrienne Houghton.  ‘My contract is up at The Real, and I didn’t renew it,’ Amanda simply stated in the Instagram Live with actor Brandon Dixon. ‘It doesn’t feel good to my soul to be at a place where I can not speak to my people the way they need to be spoken to,’ she continued. ‘And where the people that are speaking to me in despairing ways are not being handled.’

Seales had guest hosted several times before officially joining the CBS talk show back in January, replacing Tamar Braxton who had been fired in 2016.  Seales holds a master’s degree in African American studies from Columbia University, and is also a series regular as Tiffany on HBO’s hit show Insecure.
