HBO Renews ‘Insecure’ For Season 5

The popular HBO series “Insecure” will return for a fifth season. The series’ fourth season debuted on April 12. Fans who have been following the lives of Issa, played by series creator Issa Rae, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), Molly (Yvonne Orji), Tiffany (Amanda Seales) and Kelli (Natasha Rothwell) can now prepare for more episodes on the way;

“We’re thrilled that Issa, [producer Prentice Penny], and the whole Insecure team will be getting back together for a fifth season,” Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, said. “As we laugh and cringe with recognition, their stories make us all feel a little less alone in the world.”  Rae celebrated the renewal news on Twitter, writing that she was “grateful.”

Last month, the “Insecure” team celebrated the premiere of the highly anticipated fourth season with a virtual block party.  The party had been an in-person event for previous seasons, but was moved online in April due to social distancing guidelines implemented in response to the coronavirus crisis.

President Trump Urges For Economic Reopening In Virtual Town Hall

On Sunday, President Donald Trump stated that spurring an economic recovery without risking lives can be done.  Trump said, “you can satisfy both” as some states stated to gradually lift lockdowns, while also hoping to protecting people from the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 60,000 Americans.

Fielding questions from Americans in a virtual town hall from the Lincoln Memorial, President Trump acknowledged valid fears on both sides of the issue. Some people are worried about getting sick; others are reeling from lost jobs and livelihoods. Trump increased his projection for the total U.S. death total to 80,000 or 90,000, but also struck a note of urgency to restart the nation’s economy, declaring “we have to reopen our country,” adding, “we have to get it back open safely but as quickly as possible.”

Many public health experts believe the nation cannot safely reopen fully until a vaccine is developed. Trump declared Sunday that he believed one could be available by year’s end.

Asian Giant “Murder” Hornet Discovered In U.S.

The invasion of Asian giant hornets started trending over the weekend, with the term “murder hornet” being used on social media platforms. The first spotting of the 2-inch Asian giant hornet, or vespa mandarinia, was verified in the United States in December, according to the Washington state Agriculture Department. The insect does not generally target people or pets, but it is a deadly threat to honeybee hives.

Giant hornets of this species apparently enter a “slaughter phase” during which they decapitate honeybees and destroy entire hives in the span of a few hours, according to the department. An invasion could have severely negative impacts on the environment and public health, the Washington Agriculture Department warned.

The species has longer stingers with more toxic venom that could pose a danger to people if the insects feel threatened. And unlike honeybees, the Asian giant hornets can sting repeatedly. People are being warned against trying to kill the hornets themselves and to avoid their nests entirely. Instead, the public is encouraged to report a possible sighting to local authorities.

Many School Districts Ending School Year Early Due To Challenges With Distance Learning

The challenges of online learning due to stress and students’ lack of access to technology, is driving a growing number of school districts to the end the 2019-2020 school year early.

The Bibb County School District in Georgia, for example, has moved up its last day from May 22 to May 1. In a message to the district, Superintendent Curtis Jones congratulated students who improved their semester grades since the coronavirus outbreak shut down schools. The district will use the remaining weeks that schools would have been open to conduct professional development and collect the computers and other devices that have been distributed to students.

In Nebraska, many districts have all shortened their school year by at least a week, stating that dismissing students early gives teachers time to reassess online learning and begin planning for next year.  In New Hampshire, the stress families and educators have experienced during the shift to remote learning led to one school district, Monadnock School District, to the end the year two weeks early. Also in New Hampshire, Dover Public Schools moved its last day up to June 5, from June 22.

Amazon’s Sales Jump Due To Surge In Online Shopping During Pandemic

Amazon recorded a 26% increase in sales driven by a surge in shopping by consumers worried about leaving home during the coronavirus pandemic. Chief executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement that Amazon intends to ramp up spending to address the challenges and business opportunities presented by the coronavirus, adding, “If you’re a shareowner in Amazon, you may want to take a seat, because we’re not thinking small.”

Sales soared to a record high $75.5 billion in the first quarter, up from 59.7 billion the same quarter a year ago, the company reported Thursday. However, profits fell 29%  to $2.5 billion. “But these aren’t normal circumstances,” Bezos said. “Instead, we expect to spend the entirety of that $4 billion, and perhaps a bit more, on COVID-related expenses getting products to customers and keeping employees safe.”

Amazon continues to struggle to meet the huge demand from Americans and international customers, many of whom have remained at home for more than a month as the coronavirus pandemic spreads. Amazon has prioritized stocking and delivering items deemed most essential and raced to hire 175,000 U.S. workers in the span of a few weeks.
