FBI Arrest NASA Researcher For Failing To Report Ties To China

FBI agents arrested an Arkansas professor who allegedly failed to disclose his ties to Chinese entities during the course of securing funding for a NASA research project, the Justice Department announced.

Simon Saw-Teong Ang, 63, of Fayetteville, was arrested by FBI agents and charged with wire fraud. Authorities alleged Ang, an electrical engineering professor and researcher at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville (UA) since 1988, defrauded NASA and the university “by failing to disclose that he held other positions at a Chinese university and Chinese companies” in violation of conflict of interest policies, according to an FBI special agent’s affidavit in support of the complaint.

“Ang made false statements and failed to report his outside employment to UA, which enabled Ang to keep his UA job as well as obtain [US government] research funding,” according to the affidavit filed in US District Court for the Western District of Arkansas.

As part of his research, authorities said Ang received several grants and contracts from federal agencies, including NASA. The affidavit states that, while working for the university, “Ang’s close ties to the Chinese government and employment with numerous Chinese companies would have made him ineligible to receive grants issued by United States government agencies.”

If convicted, federal officials say Ang faces a statutory maximum punishment of 20 years in prison.

Disney and Lin-Manuel Miranda announced that the filmed version of the original Broadway production of Hamilton will be premiering on Disney+ on July 3rd.  Disney is “fast-tracking” the premiere, which was scheduled to be a theatrical release in October 2021, due to “social distancing” measures brought about by the global COVID-19 pandemic which has changed the original plan.

Hamilton is the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Supreme Court Divided Over Decision On President Trump’s Taxes And Financial Records

U.S. Supreme Court justices on Tuesday appeared divided over President Donald Trump’s bid to prevent congressional Democrats from obtaining his financial records, however appeared open towards a New York prosecutor’s attempt to secure similar records.

The majority signaled concern about improper “harassment” of Trump, by three Democratic-led House of Representatives committees seeking his records. In the New York case, the conservative justices joined the court’s liberals in indicating skepticism toward broad arguments by Trump’s lawyer for complete immunity from criminal investigation for a sitting president.

The subpoenas during the teleconference arguments lasted about three hours and 20 minutes were issued to third parties – an accounting firm and two banks – and not to the President himself, though he sued to block them. There is a possibility the court will not simply allow or disallow enforcement of the subpoenas but rather impose tighter standards for issuing subpoenas for the personal records of a sitting president and send the matter back to lower courts to reconsider. This course of action could delay an ultimate decision on releasing the records until after the election.

The court’s 5-4 majority includes two justices appointed by Trump.

Twitter Makes Working From Home A Permanent Option For Employees

Twitter was one of the first companies to implement a work-from-home policy to prevent the the spread of the coronavirus, and now it’s CEO Jack Dorsey broke the news to employees that the company wouldn’t likely return to its offices before September. Dorsey added that even after lockdown measures end, employees could continue work from home if they want.

In the statement, a Twitter spokesperson said the company was uniquely equipped for employees to work from home, “given our emphasis on decentralization and supporting a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere.” “The past few months have proven we can make that work,” the statement continues. “So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen.”

If employees do want to return to the office, they can do so when the time comes with some additional precautions. “When we do decide to open offices, it also won’t be a snap back to the way it was before. It will be careful, intentional, office by office and gradual,” the statement reads. Most business travel will remain off-limits, and there will be no in-person company events for the rest of 2020.

“We’re proud of the early action we took to protect the health of our employees and our communities. That will remain our top priority as we work through the unknowns of the coming months,” the spokesperson says in the statement.

‘The Office’ Costars Recreate Wedding Dance For Virtual Ceremony

John Krasinski, Steve Carell, and the rest of “The Office” cast reunited for a very special occasion.  On Krasinski’s YouTube show, “Some Good News,” John called on his former castmates, including Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, BJ Novak, Rainn Wilson, Angela Kinsey, Kate Flannery, and others, to recreate the epic dance scene from Jim (Krasinski) and Pam’s (Fischer) wedding for a newlywed couple. The actors danced to “Forever” by Chris Brown from their homes.

The couple, Susan and John, had to hold their wedding virtually because of the pandemic. Krasinski served as the officiant, saying, “Perhaps my favorite love story of the week was a couple down in Maryland, whose wedding proposal was oddly familiar. There’s only one way out of this wedding. And Susan and John, because you elegantly ripped off our proposal, I think it’s only fitting that you rip off the wedding too,” he added, surprising them.

Country star Zac Brown also performed a special song for the couple during the virtual ceremony.

Elon Musk Reopens Tesla Plant In California Despite Shutdown Orders

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Monday that his company is resuming production at its Fremont, California, factory, in violation of local stay-at-home orders. The announcement comes days after Musk filed a lawsuit against the county to reopen the factory, which is Tesla’s only vehicle assembly plant in the U.S.

Musk tweeted, “Tesla is restarting production today against Alameda County rules. I will be on the line with everyone else. If anyone is arrested, I ask that it only be me.

“Yes, California approved, but an unelected county official illegally overrode,” he added. “Also, all other auto companies in US are approved to resume. Only Tesla has been singled out. This is super messed up!”

The Tesla plant was closed March 23 under a six-county order in the San Francisco area, which has been extended through May 31. California Governor Newsom has said local orders take precedence over state orders. On Saturday, Musk filed a lawsuit against Alameda County to reopen the plant, and threatened to move the factory to Nevada or Texas “immediately.”
