New York Sees Highest Single Day Death Toll Despite Reports That Curve Is “Flattening”

The nation’s coronavirus outbreak epicenter logged its single deadliest day yet. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the state had its highest single-day death toll due to COVID-19, with 779 reported Tuesday, but the average number of hospitalizations has decreased over the past couple of days.  Cuomo said Wednesday that dramatic action and social distancing is “making the difference” in the fight against the pandemic.

“It’s working, it’s flattening the curve and we’re seeing that today,” the governor told reporters. “The curve is flattening because we are flattening the curve by what we’re doing.”  Cuomo said that closing schools and non-essential businesses has helped the state bring down the rate of new COVID-19 infections requiring hospitalization. He added that some hospitals in the state are releasing more patients than taking in new ones.

The 779 deaths on Tuesday were the highest number of new coronavirus deaths in New York for a second straight day. Cuomo, who ordered all flags in New York state flown at half-staff, said that people need to remain vigilant and disciplined about social distancing. As of Wednesday, there are 149,316 cases of COVID-19 in New York, with at least 6,268  deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Bernie Sanders Ends His 2020 Presidential Campaign

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders dropped out of the 2020 Democratic presidential race on Wednesday. Former Vice President Joe Biden is now the party’s best chance to defeat President Donald Trump in November. Biden now has a clear path to the nomination, though the end of the primary is overshadowed by the global crisis of the coronavirus pandemic as it spread across the U.S.

“If I believed we had a feasible path to the nomination, I would certainly continue the campaign, but it’s just not there,” Sanders said in a livestream address on Wednesday. “As I see the crisis gripping the nation, exacerbated by a president unwilling or unable to provide any kind of credible leadership and the work that needs to be done to protect people in this most desperate hour, I cannot in good conscience continue to mount a campaign that cannot win and which would interfere with the important work required of all of us in this difficult hour,” he said. Sanders called his choice to suspend his campaign a “difficult and painful” decision.

Amazon To Stream Stage Version Of ‘Fleabag’ For Charity

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Fleabag” is all set to stream on Amazon Prime Video to raise money for people in need amid the coronavirus pandemic. In a press release, Waller-Bridge noted that the world is going through rough times and she hopes that the “filmed” performance could help in raising money for the people affected by the pandemic while providing wholesome entertainment to those who are in self-isolation. The actress also revealed that the money raised will be going to a number of charities including NHS Charities Together and Acting For Others, and National Emergencies Trust. All the money raised from the production will support all the health care workers who are on the front lines of the pandemic.

“I hope this filmed performance of ‘Fleabag’ can help raise money while providing a little theatrical entertainment in these isolated times. All money raised will support the people throughout our society who are fighting for us on the front lines and those financially devastated by the crisis,” Waller-Bridge said. “Thank you to all our partners and to the creative team who have waived their royalties from this production to raise money for such vital causes in this unbelievably challenging situation. Thank you in advance to those who donate,” Waller-Bridge she added.

Waller-Bridge wrote “Fleabag” as a one-woman play in 2013 and went on to become a series on Amazon. The series season 2 won a total of six Primetime Emmys last year, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Stephanie Grisham Leaving Role As White House Press Secretary

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham is leaving that role to become First Lady Melania Trump’s chief of staff and spokeswoman. President Donald Trump’s campaign spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany will replace Grisham as White House press secretary.

The first lady announced Tuesday in a statement: “I am excited to welcome Stephanie back to the team in this new role. She has been a mainstay and true leader in the Administration from even before day one, and I know she will excel as Chief of Staff.”  Grisham said in the statement: “I continue to be honored to serve both the President and First Lady in the Administration. I will stay in the West Wing to help with a smooth transition for as long as needed.”

Grisham, 43, had served as the first lady’s communications chief before taking on the additional roles of White House press secretary and communications director last June. In her more than nine months as White House press secretary, Grisham never held a traditional briefing in the White House press room — a regular task for nearly all other modern press secretaries.

Lindsay Reynolds, who served as Melania Trump’s chief of staff for more than three years, resigned earlier this week “to spend time with her family,” the first lady’s statement said, adding: “I appreciate all that Lindsay Reynolds did over the past three years, and wish her well in her future endeavors.”

James Taylor Is ‘The Voice’ Season 18’s Mega Mentor

Music icon James Taylor will serve as the mega mentor on Season 18 of The Voice. Taylor will join the coaches to mentor the artists remaining from the Battle Rounds, and prepare each team for the Knockout Rounds, which will begin on Monday (April 13) at 8 p.m. EST/PST

The Knockout Rounds will have the contestants paired against a teammate once more, but unlike the Battle Rounds, they will each select their own song to perform individually while their competitor watches and waits. The coaches will then choose the winner from their team to advance. Taylor will help coach and rehearse with the four artists that were saved by their individual coaches during the Battle Rounds for the first-ever Four-Way Knockout. Only one winner on each team will advance, chosen by America’s votes and revealed at the beginning of the first live show.

Coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Nick Jonas and Blake Shelton play a game of ‘telephone’ to tell each other the news about Taylor in a promotional announcement for the show. Check out the comical announcement at the link: here

Body Of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean Found After Canoe Accident

Authorities found the body of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean on Monday, five days after her canoe apparently capsized in the Chesapeake Bay. McKean, 40, the daughter of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, went missing late Thursday afternoon along with her son 8-year-old son, Gideon.

A preliminary investigation found that McKean and her son may have been paddling the canoe out into the bay to retrieve a ball and were unable to paddle back to shore. Maryland Natural Resources Police said Monday that McKean’s body was found in 25 feet of water about 2.5 miles south of her mother’s residence, where the canoe had launched. Authorities used aviation and underwater imaging sonar technology to find her body. Authorities said they would resume their search for Gideon on Tuesday.

President Trump Allows Navy Ship Comfort To Be Used For COVID-19 Patients

President Donald Trump said Monday that he granted New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s request to treat novel coronavirus patients on a hospital ship docked off of Manhattan.

Cuomo had told reporters earlier Monday that he was “going to call the President this afternoon and ask him to shift the (USNS) Comfort from non-Covid to Covid.”  Trump, speaking at a White House news briefing Monday afternoon, said he “was informed that Gov. Cuomo has already told you and announced he called me up a little while ago and asked whether or not it would be possible to use the ship with respect to fighting the virus. It’s set for Covid,” Trump said of the Comfort. The President also confirmed that the ship has been approved to treat New Jersey patients.

The US Navy hospital ship had originally been designated as a space for non-coronavirus patients to alleviate the pressure from New York hospitals, though Trump signaled this weekend that the ship could be used for coronavirus patients if needed.

Netflix Says “Tiger King” To Release Extra Episode In The Coming Week

Netflix is reportedly adding a new Tiger King episode, according to star Jeff Lowe. On Twitter, Lowe revealed a new Tiger King episode would premiere on Netflix soon.

In a video addressed to Los Angeles Dodgers’ player Justin Turner and his wife Kourtney Pogue, (who recently discussed being obsessed with Tiger King on her podcast, Holding Kourt), Lowe teased the couple for their interest in the show in the clip on Twitter. “Thank you for watching our show, Christie said you’re a big fan, and, yeah, you need a life,” he said. “You just wasted seven hours on us.” Lowe also dropped some news that will interest many viewers of the popular documentary series. He said: “Netflix is adding one more episode, we’ll be on next week. We’re filming here tomorrow.” He signed-off by urging the public to stay safe amid the new coronavirus pandemic, adding: “Take care, stay safe, and put your mask on.”

Netflix dropped Tiger King: Murder, Madness and Mayhem on March 26, and the show became a sensation online. Tiger King explores the world of big cat breeding, focusing in particular on the crimes of Joseph Maldonado Passage, or Joe Exotic, a former country-musician, Oklahoma Zookeeper, gun enthusiast, and big cat breeder. Maldonado-Passage was found guilty in 2019 for paying a hitman $3,000 to murder Carole Baskin, his rival and founder of Big Cat Rescue. He owned an exotic animal park and often boasted of having the largest number of big cats in America.
