Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos Tests Positive For Coronavirus

“Good Morning America” host George Stephanopoulos revealed Monday that he’s tested positive for the coronavirus. Stephanopoulos told co-host Robin Roberts on Monday morning, “I feel fine.”

Stephanopoulos’ wife, Ali Wentworth, had come down with COVID-19 and tweeted that she’s “never been sicker.” Her husband has been taking care of her, their children and doing his TV job in the interim.

Stephanopoulos said the only potential symptoms he has felt were a lower back ache he’d attributed to a hard workout, and a briefly diminished sense of smell.  Stephanopoulos told viewers that his wife Ali Wentworth is doing “much, much better,” has now had no fever for five days, and is getting out of bed more.

Parts Of U.S. Could Reopen In May As Coronavirus Nears Peak

On Sunday, public health officials discussed the possibility of partially reopening parts of the economy from government-mandated lockdowns as soon as next month, despite U.S. coronavirus infection and death totals continuing to climb. As of Sunday morning, there are more than 530,000 confirmed infections in the United States – accounting for roughly 30% of the more than 1.8 million people infected around the world. More than 20,000 Americans and more than 110,000 people globally have died.

The number of confirmed cases in the U.S. climbed by nearly 200,000 over the course of the past week, however, White House officials are pushing to reopen the economy as quickly as possible, given the catastrophic economic damage that has unfolded by shuttering nonessential businesses across the country.

More than 16 million Americans filed initial unemployment claims during the final two weeks of March and in the first week of April. Gross domestic product numbers during April, May and June are expected to be among the worst in modern history. Some estimates see the unemployment rate climbing as high as 30%.

During an appearance Sunday morning on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said a partial May reopening could be possible in some parts of the country. But he warned it would have to be done on a rolling basis – and that some particularly hard-hit parts of the country may need to wait longer. “It is not going to be a light switch that we say ‘OK, it is now June or July or whatever, click, the light switch goes back on.’ It is going to be depending on where you are in the country, the nature of the outbreak that you’ve already experienced and the threat of an outbreak that you may not have experienced,” he said, stressing that a reopening of the economy would not be “one-size-fits-all.”

Tom Hanks Hosts First-Ever “Saturday Night Live: Home Edition”

In his first TV appearance since being diagnosed with coronavirus, Hanks hosted the show and pondered about why he was chosen to host the unusual episode, admitting he had coronavirus to “thank,” explaining: “I have been the celebrity canary in the coal mine for the coronavirus, and ever since being diagnosed I have been more like America’s dad than ever before. No one wants to be around me very long and I make people uncomfortable.”  Hanks and wife Rita Wilson announced on March 11 that they had tested positive for the virus. The two were in Australia for pre-production on Baz Luhrmann’s untitled Elvis Presley film from Warner Bros.

This is SNL’s first new episode since the series suspended production last month amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The show was supposed to return from hiatus on March 28 with an original episode hosted by John Krasinski and featuring musical guest Dua Lipa.

‘Disney On Broadway’ Streaming Fundraiser For COVID-19 Relief Canceled

A streaming fundraiser of 2019’s Celebrating 25 Magical Years of Disney on Broadway has been canceled after organizers failed to secure permission to stream the concert. Disney on Broadway was scheduled to stream April 13 on broadwaycares.org in an effort to raise money for the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund. The fund was created to help financially support actors, musicians and production workers during the coronavirus pandemic. Celebrating 25 Magical Years of Disney on Broadway took place in November 2019 at New York’s New Amsterdam Theatre. The concert featured a 15-piece orchestra and a cast of 79 performers.

However, a news release stated that it was unable to reach an agreement with the leadership of the American Federation of Musicians to permit the stream of the 2019 concert. Broadway Cares said it had already received permission to stream the event from Disney Theatrical Productions, SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity Association.

Broadway theaters in New York have been shuttered since mid-March to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Donations to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund can still be made by visiting broadwaycares.org/help2020.

California Governor Gavin Newsom Faces Backlash After Sending 500 Ventilators Back To Stockpile

California Governor Gavin Newsom stirred up controversy after announcing his state’s plan to send 500 ventilators to the national stockpile on Monday, in order to assist New York and other states that have been hit hardest by the novel coronavirus.

However, officials of multiple counties in California have been requesting ventilators themselves.  In Riverside County, one of the worst-hit counties in California, public health officials are predicting the country will reach its ventilator capacity by April 26.  Kevin Jeffries, Riverside County’s first district supervisor, said, “It did catch us off guard, especially when you see 500 ventilators have been shipped out and our request through the state and feds have not been filled and our attempt to purchase them on the market has not been successful.”  The county put in a request to the state for 500 ventilators on March 29, but it was denied. They then requested an additional 1,000 ventilators on April 1 and purchased 1.1 million N95 masks that have not yet arrived.

Newsom addressed the criticisms in a press conference on Thursday, pointing out that the state is currently using only 31.89% of the hospital systems’ existing ventilator capacity, excluding the ventilators procured by the state. He also said the ventilator stockpiles are pre-positioned strategically throughout the state so they can be deployed to those in need within hours.

Federal Reserve Launches Unprecedented ‘Main Street’ Rescue Plan

The Federal Reserve launched the unprecedented ‘Main Street’ funding support plan Thursday, funding nearly $2.3 trillion into the U.S. economy as it continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.

The Fed said it will use $75 billion in Treasury capital to purchase up to $600 billion in small and mid-sized business loans, and lend around $500 billion to states and cities around the country. The four-year loans will focus on companies with 10,000 employees or less, the Fed said, and will compliment the central bank’s previous announcement of its intention to purchase municipal bonds. The Fed will also extend facilities to support credit markets by another $850 billion, the central bank said.

The move followed news that more than 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, taking the three-week tally to around 16 million.

Andrea Bocelli To Perform At Italy’s Empty Duomo Cathedral On Easter Sunday

Andrea Bocelli will live stream an Easter Sunday concert from Milan’s famed Duomo cathedral. The pews will be empty and Bocelli will be accompanied only by organist Emanuele Vianelli. The concert will stream live on Bocelli’s YouTube channel Sunday at 10 a.m. ET. In a statement, Bocelli said he hopes that the Easter concert, which will consist mostly of spiritual songs like “Ave Maria,” will provide some comfort to viewers regardless of their religion.

Bocelli’s live concert from an empty Duomo — which is normally full for Easter mass — will be an example of the extent to which the pandemic has altered public life. Italy has been hit hard by the pandemic, and Bocelli’s foundation has raised more than $140,000 via GoFundMe to help hospitals purchase supplies. He will also be part of Global Citizen’s huge “One World: Together At Home” event on April 18.
